Black mould on your bathroom ceiling in Tipton? Why it grows, why painting straight over it fails, and how it is treated and repainted so it stays away.
Steam settles on the cold ceiling and mould grows where it stays damp.
A fungicidal wash kills the spores. Painting over live mould lets it grow back.
Let the ceiling dry fully, then seal stains so they do not bleed through.
A bathroom paint with mould inhibitors resists regrowth.
An extractor fan running during and after showers is what stops it returning.
Black spots spreading across a bathroom ceiling are mould, and in almost every case the cause is condensation. Warm, steamy air from baths and showers hits the colder ceiling, turns back into water and sits there, and mould grows wherever surfaces stay damp. It is often worst in the corners and above the shower, where the air moves least.
Painting straight over mould does not work. The spores are still alive underneath, they grow back through the new paint within weeks, and the stains show through. The proper way is to kill the mould with a fungicidal wash, let the ceiling dry completely, seal any stubborn stains with a stain-blocking primer, and then repaint with an anti-mould bathroom paint. Just as important is reducing the condensation, because no paint can win against a room that stays wet.
In Tipton we see this a lot in the Victorian terraces around Great Bridge and Princes End, where bathrooms were often added into small back rooms with no extractor fan, and in older homes where the original fan has stopped pulling air. Fitting or fixing ventilation, then treating and repainting the ceiling, usually solves it for good.

No. It grows back through the new paint. It has to be killed and treated first.
It helps a lot, but only alongside good ventilation. Paint alone cannot beat a room that stays wet.
That is a job for an electrician. We treat and repaint, and will tell you if ventilation is the root cause.
